Introduction
The International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) is an organization of professionals committed to advancing basic and clinical research on Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). Their mission includes the cooperative planning, implementation, analysis, and reporting of multi-center studies with an international emphasis. The IRLSSG may also pursue other research activities and education related to RLS and to other related entities such as periodic limb movements (PLM). To this end, the IRLSSG aims to advance knowledge about the cause(s), pathogenesis, and clinical impact of RLS and related disorders. In pursuit of its goals, the IRLSSG will actively encourage recruitment of new investigators to its fields of interest and will cooperate with outside organizations that share its goals.

Goals
The IRLSSG is committed to the principles of open and full scientific communication and collaboration, peer review, full disclosure of potential conflicts of interest, and democratic governance of its organization and activities. The IRLSSG is also interested in providing scientific and medical information to professionals and the public regarding RLS and related disorders.

Objective of this Association
The objective of this association is the promotion of the European scientific research in the field of RLS and the optimization of medical care for patients by improving diagnostic and therapeutic measures. A close cooperation of physicians, scientists, and medical personnel, as well as patients and their family members, is to be developed further and will facilitate a fast knowledge and information exchange in the field of RLS.

Therefore, the association wants to contribute to and improve the European information and communication structures and to support the establishment of standardized patient data banks.

The statute's purpose in particular will be carried out by the following measures:
  • Fusion and integration of international experts within the field of RLS
  • Initiation and execution of scientific projects in basic and clinical research as well as research in health care of restless legs syndrome, which are not, or only partly, supported by public organisations or industrial sponsoring
  • Execution of scientific meetings, seminars, and advanced training activities
  • Cooperation with national and international scientists, research projects, or consortia that could support the objectives of the association
  • Assignments of research contracts to universities or non-profit organizations
  • Publication of research results in a newsletter or a scientific magazine
  • Provision of grants to members and non-members for participation in scientific and educational meetings

Young Investigators
The IRLSSG is actively encouraging recruitment of new investigators to its fields of interest.  Young investigators whose work has been accepted for presentation at national and international professional meetings are invited to apply to the IRLSSG Travel Committee for awards to help with travel expenses.

Currently the travel committee accepts applications for travel to meetings through 2007.  The deadline for applications is April 22, 2007.
